The ABCs of Getting the Most from Your Expert Interview / Consultation
A great expert call doesn't happen by accident. The "ABCs" framework helps you get the most out of every consultation:
A — Anchor your questions in context.
Before the call, share the project context: who you are, what decision you're trying to make, why this matters now. Experts give better answers when they understand the stakes.
B — Build rapport in the first 90 seconds, then move on.
Quick introductions help, but don't burn ten minutes on small talk. Set the tone: "I have specific questions. Mind if I jump in?"
C — Capture and confirm.
Take notes (or use the recording feature). At the end of each thread, summarize what you heard: "So you're saying X happens because of Y — is that right?" This catches misunderstandings while the expert is still on the line.
Additional tips:
- Send a quick agenda 24 hours ahead of the call
- Start with the biggest question, not the smallest — you might run out of time
- Don't try to validate a hypothesis; try to find the cases where your hypothesis is wrong
- Follow up in writing if you need clarification — most experts will respond within a few days post-call
