How much will I get paid? Where do I set my rate?

Your pay depends on the type of work. Video Consultations pay at the Expert Rate you set in your profile. Written Responses pay a fixed fee stated when you accept the assignment. Scoped Engagements pay an Expert Fee agreed for that engagement.

If you registered as an expert before August 11, 2026, the updated Expert Participation Agreement begins to apply to your work on September 1, 2026, or earlier if you accept it when you next sign in. Work you accept before then remains governed by the agreement in effect at the time you accepted it.

Video Consultations

You set your Expert Rate yourself, and it is the hourly rate for Video Consultations. The rate that applies to a call is the one in effect when the client books it, not the one in effect when the call happens.

Example: if your rate is $150 an hour and the call runs 40 minutes, you are paid $100.

There is one exception to the first band. If a client ends a call within the first 15 minutes because of poor consultation quality, no payment is due, but only where the client states the quality concern at or promptly after ending the call and OnFrontiers reviews that stated concern in good faith against the engagement record and confirms it. A call ended in the first 15 minutes for any other reason does not reduce what you are paid.

What experts typically charge

Rates vary with experience. US experts commonly set rates between $125 and $150 an hour, and highly experienced practitioners often set $200 an hour or more. Your rate affects how many requests you see, but the number is yours to set.

Written Responses

The fee stated when you accept the assignment is the fee payable, and it does not change for that assignment. You are paid when the work product is accepted.

A Written Response may be rejected only for material non-conformity with the scope stated in the order, and only where the customer states the reasons. Unless the order said otherwise before you accepted it, you have one opportunity to cure. Where the order provides that no cure period applies, you are paid for any portion of the work product that materially conforms.

If an order is withdrawn before you submit, no fee is payable. OnFrontiers may make a discretionary payment in recognition of work evidenced on the Platform, but any such payment is voluntary and creates no entitlement or precedent. Work you submitted before the order was withdrawn is still assessed and, if accepted, paid.

Scoped Engagements

The Expert Fee is set for each engagement and recorded in the Engagement Order. It may differ from your Expert Rate. You are paid for the hours the customer approves, or that are deemed approved.

Hours worked beyond the not-to-exceed amount, without a confirmed amended Engagement Order, are not authorized and are not payable. Submit your hours within the times shown on the Platform, including any post-closure or post-cancellation window and any late-submission grace period. Hours not submitted in time are waived.

Cancellations and no-shows

If a client cancels a booked Video Consultation fewer than 24 hours before the scheduled start, or does not show, you receive 25% of the fee that would have been payable at your Expert Rate. If a client cancels at least 24 hours ahead, no compensation is due.

What is not paid

For Video Consultations, OnFrontiers does not pay for time beyond what the client booked, or for preparatory work you choose to do, unless agreed with OnFrontiers in writing. Experts are not paid for opportunity calls.

Talking about your rate

For Video Consultations and Written Responses, do not tell a customer or client what OnFrontiers pays you without OnFrontiers' prior written consent. OnFrontiers charges customers more than it pays you and keeps the difference as compensation for making the Platform available. This restriction does not apply to the Expert Fee for a Scoped Engagement, which is disclosed to the customer. You may always discuss what you are paid with your professional advisors, and to the extent you need to in order to enforce or defend your rights.
